Latest News UM Sailing Canes
Fall 2010
We had an outstandingly succesful season last year and managed to hang in the top 20 ICSA Nationals rankings for the entire year, at one point almost breaking the top 10. The start of the next college sailing season is just around the corner and we are looking to step it up one more level this year. The extra attention due to the ranks appears to have helped in the recruiting department and we are looking forward to sailing with some great new Freshman. The practice and regatta schedule for the Fall has just been posted to the site. If your a new student come check out the team at "Canefest" and or stop by CGSC for the new student BBQ the 1st saturday of classes.
We also have some cool new "U" sailing team bumper stickers and drink coozies for sale to help raise travel funds.
Other excited developments are that the ICSA approved 2 of our proposals at the National General Meeting held in Wisconsin.
The first item is that ICSA voted to adopt our proposed ban on disposible water bottles at all events. In SAISA we have been doing this very succesfully for the last several years and now we are exporting our "Green" ethics to the rest of the ICSA. ICSA has asked that we help them develop some educational material to distribute to the teams so that they better understand just how bad these water bottles are to the environment, to your health, and to your budget. Anyone who wants to help with this project contact Kay.
The second realy big item is that ICSA accepted our preliminary bid to host the 2012 National Semi-finals right here in Miami!!!! We hope to do this in conjunction with the Volvo Stop over. Needless to say this is going to take some major fund raising as it requires 36 boats. So put those brain cells to work for some creative ideas.

Press Release:
Norfolk, Virginia (April 28, 2009) A year after its successful introduction of a semifinal round and “brackets” to the spring-time competition for the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship, ICSA (Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association) has announced the pairings for this year’s Western and Eastern Semifinals and has scheduled the two events to run concurrently from the Fan Pier in Boston, Mass., as part of the festivities surrounding the only North American stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race. From May 2-3, 2009, 36 college sailing teams -- which have been seeded into the Western or Eastern Semifinals based on their conference ranking will race in FJs on Boston’s Inner Harbor.
There are 200 ICSA-member sailing teams in North America and to gain entry into this select group the 36 teams had to perform well enough in their conference (there are seven) to earn their spot in one of the two semifinal events: the ICSA National Championship Eastern Semifinals which are being hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, Mass.), and the ICSA National Championship Western Semifinals hosted by Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.). Sponsored by Marlow Ropes, PUMA and US SAILING, the short-course events will run simultaneously, with the top nine finishing schools from each event advancing to the grand finale of the year the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship which will be hosted in San Francisco, Calif., by Stanford University (Palo Alto) and the St. Francis Yacht Club (San Francisco) from June 1-3, 2009.
The semifinal round created a new level of excitement among the competitors, it has insured that a few dark horses will get a better shot at the ultimate title. *Among the familiar top-ranked schools there are several newer faces competing at this level, including** the University of Miami (Coral Gables, Fla.). * *The University of Miami, fourth ranked in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, will compete in the Eastern Semifinals.*
National Championship Semi-finals will be held May 1-2 At the Volvo Race Village on the Boston water front. Top 9 of 18 teams in each semi-finals division advance to the finals National Championship Finals will be held at City Front in San Francisco first week of June.
April 26th: UM finished 5th out of 13 teams at the George E Morris intersectional in Boston this past weekend check out pur results page for more info.
