Our Coaches

Lead Coach


Greg Koman (gregkoman@gmail.com) comes to Miami after having coached at the University of Vermont from 2007 until 2012, first as the assistant coach and then as head coach. During his tenure as the Assistant Coach at UVM, the team qualified for its first coed ICSA National Championships (2008, 2010), attained its highest coed national ranking (6th, 2008), qualified for its first Atlantic Coast Championships (2008, 2009, 2010), produced its first All-American sailors (2008, 2010), produced its first ICSA Sportsman of the Year finalist (2008), produced its first NEISA Babineau Crew of the Year winner (2010) and produced its first College Sailor of the Year finalist (2010).  For his part, Koman was awarded as a 2009 U.S. Sailing Coach of the Year. 


During his tenure as Head Coach at UVM, the team qualified for its first Men's Singlehanded National Championship (2011), qualified for its first Women's Atlantic Coast Championship (2011) and the women's team attained its highest national ranking (10th, 2011) at the time. For his efforts, Koman was awarded the 2010-2011 University of Vermont Club Sports Coach/Advisor of the Year.  Additionally, a number of the sailors mentored under Koman at UVM are now college coaches themselves at some of the best programs in the country including Brown, Stanford and Fordham.


Koman is now a Ph.D. Student in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at the University of Miami and he joined the Hurricanes as their Lead Coach in the Fall of 2016.  His addition paid immediate dividends as the team qualified to the ICSA Coed National Championship in the Spring of 2017 for the first time in 5 years.  


Coach: Pat Downey

Pat Downey is the current Executive Director at the U.S. Sailing Center in Miami. Pat was a three time All-American sailor at Old Dominion University, and as a sophomore won the ICSA Sloop National Championship. Since graduating from ODU, Pat has competed in the 2000 US Olympic trails in the winsurfing class and has trained many junior sailors to the U.S. Junior National Team and the U.S. World Team.


Coach & Faculty Advisor: Kay Kilpatrick (kkilpatrick@rsmas.miami.edu)

Kay sailed for Boston University in college and is an active snipe sailor.  She is on the research faculty at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel Marine campus with expertise in Satellite Remote Sensing.


Coach & Faculty Advisor: Bill Johns 

Bill was on the sailing team at Florida State University and is an active Lightning and Etchells sailor.
